Which fits your business, WordPress or a hand-built website?

Choose WordPress if you want to edit your own pages often. Choose a hand-built site if your content rarely changes and you want speed and low upkeep. Both can be good. The right one depends on how you will use the site.

What WordPress gives you

WordPress is software that runs your website and gives you a dashboard to change text, photos and pages without code. It has themes and plugins for many needs, including shops and bookings. A person with no technical background can learn to edit a page in an afternoon.

What it costs you

WordPress needs looking after. Its documentation says automatic updates are on by default on most sites for minor core releases, but plugins and themes update automatically only in special cases, so someone has to do those. The WordPress hardening guide opens with keeping WordPress and its plugins current and deleting any plugin you are not using. More plugins mean more things that can slow the site or break. Without that routine, a WordPress site tends to become slow and unsafe.

What a hand-built site gives you

A hand-built site is plain pages written for your business, with no database or plugins behind it. It loads quickly, has little that can be attacked and needs almost no upkeep. Changes are done by the person who built it, so it suits businesses whose content changes a few times a year.

What we measured

Our own site is hand-built. On 10 October 2026 its home page scored 99 for mobile performance in Google's PageSpeed Insights, with the main content on screen in 1.7 seconds on a simulated slow phone connection, and no plugins to update. A well-built WordPress site can also be fast, but it gets there by careful choices and a short plugin list, not by default. We have not measured a WordPress site of our own, so we do not quote a number for one.

Changing your mind later

Moving from one to the other is possible. The part to get right is the addresses: Google's guidance for site moves is to map every old address to its new one with permanent redirects and keep them for at least a year. See redesign and speed fixes.

How to choose

  • If you change prices, offers or posts every week, choose WordPress.
  • If you want a blog or a shop with many products, choose WordPress.
  • If your content stays the same for months and speed matters most, choose hand-built.
  • If you do not want to think about updates, choose hand-built, or WordPress with maintenance.

Web Start Karimnagar builds both. See WordPress development and management and website design and development.

Quick answers

Is WordPress good for a small business website?

Yes, when you want to edit pages yourself and keep it updated. It needs regular maintenance to stay fast and safe.

Is a hand-built website cheaper to maintain?

Usually, because there is no software to keep updating. The trade-off is that changes go through the person who built it.
